Skills Boost Course
Develop your skills in an amazing flying region
with expert guidance and feedback
SOUTH AFRICA
19/03/2025 - 02/04/2025
0 spaces left (waiting list only)
I'll be with you every day, to guide you as we work on your techniques and decision-making. You'll gain key flying skills and develop your launches, landings and wing control.
This is an exclusive training group of only 8 pilots, supervised by two Chief Instructors (Greg Hamerton and Barry Pedersen).
It's a Skills Boost Course best suited to licenced pilots with 10-100 hours of airtime.
We'll be working on safe piloting practices, kiting, toplanding, soaring, thermaling and an introduction to cross country flying.
It's great for building airtime and confidence and will leave you with fully developed skills you'll use for the rest of your flying career.

Paragliding in South Africa
We'll be based in Cape Town, where we have a range of amazing mountains. You'll learn something new at each site.
We'll move to Wilderness for coastal airtime, then visit the Porterville valley for thermaling and cross country flying.
When the conditions become too strong to fly we'll take you to experience the local attractions like beautiful beaches, vineyards, the Waterfront or ride a cablecar up to the top of the iconic Table Mountain.

Everything you need to know
What's for breakfast?
At our accommodation, Birdmen serves a full continental breakfast every morning including fruit, cereals, toast, cheeses, cold meats, and yoghurts. They are also happy to prepare bacon and eggs.
When we leave for site every morning, we will stop at a local shop where you can buy lunch to eat on the mountain while we fly.
All South Africans love to “Braai” which is a local way of cooking meat over an open fire. Birdmen serves it with an array of local salads and vegetables.
Vegetarian / Vegan options available on request.
Meals other than breakfast are charged for.
What equipment do I need?
A paraglider that has been serviced in the last 2 years and is still airworthy. A reserve parachute that has been repacked in the last year. A helmet certified for paragliding. A high-quality radio (not Baofeng, something like Icom, Alinco, Yaesu, Kenwood etc) that can operate on 141.600 MHz and 141.625 (the official SAHPA frequencies). A harness with certified back protection.
How much flying experience do I need?
Your licence + at least 10 hours. This is designed to help low airtime pilots progress safely into thermaling, mountain flying and cross country. You must be able to launch and land independently, but the flying will not be demanding.
We'll be working on SKILLS, returning to the launch sites to topland, soar, and work on precision launches, wing control and landing setups.
If you have a lot of experience (over 100 hours or 50km XC) this might not be the course for you, but you're welcome to join if you'd like to level up your skills.
Or consider my XC Courses in Spain for some mid-summer megamiles mania.
What about insurance?
You'll get liability insurance when you take out temporary membership of SAHPA, and you usually have this included with your association as well.
You'll need accident insurance that covers paragliding rescue and emergency medical costs, which will give you access to private medical care (which is good) ... you do not want to be dumped into the public hospitals!
Once you have secured your place I'll share some suggestions in the WhatsApp group.
What if I don't have a flying licence?
You cannot join the trip. Unfortunately this is a coaching group only for licenced pilots. It is a legal requirement to have a recognised flying licence in South Africa. You will be required to present your current licence to SAHPA who will verify it and issue temporary membership, which we require for access to the flying sites.
What if the weather is bad?
It's a good time of year for flying and we expect you to be in the air during more than half of the days.
In the event of bad weather, we will offer theory training, ground handling or alternative activities.
There are no refunds due to unsuitable weather days. We are highly motivated and will make every effort to find safe flying conditions for everyone. As much as we've tried, the weather is beyond our control.
How do I join?
Click the blue button below to be taken to the booking form. I'll email you payment details so you can secure your place.
Isn't South Africa dangerous?
Yes. It's not like Europe or America. You must be smart about where you go and what you do.
That's why we will be fully supported by Birdmen Paragliding, who have been running tours here for over two decades. They track everyone and collect you soon after you land. There's no need to be walking anywhere.
Don't flash your cash, walk about with your mobile phone out, or land near the townships (squatter camps). Keep a close eye on your bags. Stick together with the group and you'll be fine.
On the whole, the people are friendly, especially in the areas where we fly, which tend to be remote.
What is the Refund Policy?
The deposit of £1,000 is non-refundable, because I have to block-book the guiding service and accommodation. The balance is due 1 month before the trip, and will only be refunded if I am able to fill your space.
